Fall To Do List
Best Time Of The Year To Plant
Plant:
- Spring bulbs, such as daffodils and narcissus bulbs now; don’t forget to amend each hole with worm casting and soft rock phosphate.
- This is a great time of year to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials.
- Plant pansies, violas, snapdragons, Alyssum, calendula when daytime temperatures cool down. These also look great in containers.
- Sprinkle wildflower seeds and annual seeds such as larkspur, poppies, and nasturtiums.
- Plant Amaryllis bulbs for holiday blooms.
- Perfect time to plant Texas sage and barberry so they can establish a good root system before next summer.
- Now until mid-October, plant curly and flat-leaf Italian parsley, mustard greens,
- Swiss chard, leaf lettuce, radicchio, and arugula -- all add great texture to the garden, as well as wonderful, FRESH salads.
- Plant garlic, leeks, or onions around roses to deter pests.
Lawn Care:
- Put down corn gluten meal for weed control before the 15th!
- Two weeks later, apply a granular fertilizer to the lawn and flower beds.
- Remember lava sand-- a great way to help aerate and break up the clay.
- Fall is a great time to aerate, use Lazy Man Liquid Gold.
Clean-Up:
- Time for fall clean up in the flower beds and only trim back shrubs that aren’t spring bloomers.
- If you still have green tomatoes on the vine, before the first frost, pull up the plants and hang upside down in the garage or shed; the tomatoes will ripen.
- Mulch your beds well, providing your plants a nice warm blanket for winter.
- Also, keep feeding your hummingbirds!
A garden is the best alternative therapy. Happy Halloween!

What Is Organic?
The simple answer is that organic gardeners don't use synthetic fertilizers or toxic pesticides on their plants.
But gardening organically is much more than what you don't do. When you garden organically, you think of your plants as part of a whole system within Nature that starts in the soil and includes the water supply, people, wildlife, plant selection and insects.
An organic gardener strives to work in harmony with natural systems and to minimize and continually replenish any resources the garden consumes. Organic gardening, then, begins with attention to the soil, for it is the engine of the garden. You regularly add organic matter to the soil, using locally available resources wherever possible. Decaying plant wastes, such as grass clippings, fall leaves and vegetable scraps from your kitchen, are the building blocks of compost, the ideal organic matter for your garden soil.
The other key to growing organically is to choose native or adaptive plants to your area. Plants adapted to your climate and conditions are better able to grow without a lot of attention or input, and will grow and flurish under organic programs.
How Do I Start?
Building the soil is the defining act of organic gardening, and is the basis for its success.
Soil is much more than just dirt. It is a mixture of organic matter, fine rock particles,
water, microorganisms and other life in the soil. By enriching this life in the soil we in turn are allowing nature to do her work resulting in heathly and beautiful plants.
Healthy soil contains decomposed plant and animal material, insects, bacteria, fungi and earthworms. The most important step in building quality soil is to add organic matter. Organic matter will help improve soil structure and microbial activity. There's a wide range of organic materials available to gardeners. The most popular and easiest to use is compost. Cotton Burr, manure based and mushroom are among several different types of compost, additional materials include, old leaves, straw, grass clippings, pecan shells, peanut hulls, wood chips and humate. Other materials which should be added include lava sand, granite sand, greensand, and soft rock phosphate. Take advantage of the household waste you produce to make your own compost.
While in the process of building your soil, supplement with organic fertilizers to feed your plants. Foliar feeding with seaweed is extremely benificial. Seaweed contains at least sixty micronutrients, including iron, copper, zinc, boron, and manganese. Seaweed also contains a high concentration of natural growth hormones which allow it to grow rapidly in its natural environment. When applied to plants, these growth hormones stimulate root growth, reduce transplant shock, promote more rapid fruit set, increase frost resistance and improve storage life. Research has also revealed that seaweed contains antitoxins that help plants fend off bacteria, viruses and pests.
