May To Do List

  1. Plant, plant, plant: great time to plant shrubs and trees before the heat of the summer, give the roots a head start.
  2. Plant summer bulbs such as cannas, glads, and caladiums.
  3. Hot weather vegetables such as southern peas, okra, and melons.
  4. Bougainvillea, Mandeville, Allamanda, Penta, and Hibiscus for that tropical look in pots.
  5. Warm season annuals: portulaca, marigold, zinnia, periwinkle, lantana, cosmos, and verbena.
  6. Time to prune: spring blooming shrubs that have finished their bloom. Cut mums back to forsythia after blooming by removing dead wood and 1 in stems that have flowered. Pinch back fall blooming perennials to encourage compact growth (asters and mums) salvia greggi after first bloom by 1/3rd. Lightly clip grey/silver evergreens such as lavender, santolina, and artemisia to keep compact.
  7. Time to fertilize blooming shrubs and perennials, feed roses and azaleas, Foliar feed with Agrispon and Bioform/John’s Recipe.
  8. Release beneficial insects as needed, praying mantis, ladybugs, and trichagramma wasps.
  9. Check trees and evergreens for bagworms, pick off and destroy, or use BT spray if necessary.
  10. During a wet spring, begin to treat crape myrtles for powdery mildew.
  11. Plant summer seeds, soak overnight before planting.
  12. Don’t forget to mulch! Remember this helps to regulate soil temperature, reduce weed growth, and reduce watering requirements.
  13. Replace your hummingbird feeders with fresh nectar twice weekly.
